Graduation Speech At Universitys School Of Public Health

Throughout my life, I have had three core parts of my identity that I have actively incorporated into my activities and choices: (1) an intense enjoyment of mathematics and analytical thinking; (2) a love of creative expression; and (3) a profound desire for justice in the world. These aspects of my nature have often come into conflict, vying for my time and attention. After considering how these characteristics might cease competing and instead work together to make me a more effective agent of change, I am confident that attending Berkeley’s prestigious School of Public Health will enable me to harness my wide-ranging experiences and thrive in the promotion of health justice. During my undergraduate career at Duke University, each of the facets of my identity was manifest in a different area of my life. When I was selecting a major, for example, I had difficulty choosing between the formidable analytical challenge of mathematics and the creative outlet of English. Ultimately, I decided to major in mathematics and minor in English, mirroring the diversity of experience I have intentionally pursued. Furthermore, I engaged these various aspects of my personality through collegiate extracurricular activities. My most meaningful endeavor was membership in a campus ministry, through which I was able to put my desire for justice into action from a spiritual foundation, by guiding a team of students in planning community service events. In America today, there is a common misconception concerning the form of government this nation possesses. Some believe it to be a democracy while others understand it to be a republic. Regardless of what people believe the American form of government to be, it does not change the fact that it was founded as a representative republic, and therefore, must be maintained and upheld as such. The following paragraphs will show the difference between a democracy and a republic, describe what form the Founders intended for the American government and explain in what ways this nation has strayed from the original form of government created by its Founders. First, the meaning of and difference between a democracy and a republic must be understood.†¦show more content†¦This desire continued and fueled the fire for the Declaration of Independence which eventually became the foundation for our governing document: the U.S. Constitution. In the Preamble to our Constitution, it states, â⠂¬Å"We, the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect Union...secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity...† (Constitution of the United States – Preamble). It is evident in the very first lines of the Constitution that the Founders considered the preservation of freedom to be one of the most important features of a government. In addition, the core principles that the Founders based our government on were drawn from the Bible. Noah Webster, whose ideas were influential in the writing of the constitution stated, â€Å"...the genuine source of correct republican principles is the Bible, particularly the New Testament or the Christian religion† (History of the United States). Tell tale heart1 Essay TRUE!nervous very, very dreadfully nervous I had been and am; but why will you say that I am mad? Edgar Allen Poe shows us the dark part of human kind. Conflict with in ones self, state of madness, and emotional break down all occur within this short story. The narrator of the story is a mad man that is haunted by his idea that the old man has an evil eye. There are two conflicts that occur with the story: internal and external. The internal conflict is the narrators guilt over killing the old man forces him to believe that he hears the dead mans heart beating. I talked more quicklymore vehemently; but the noise steadily increased.. Ones owns conscience can only take so much before the person breaks down. Oh God! What could I do? I foamedI ravedI swore! I swung the chair upon which I had been sitting, and grated it upon the boards, but the noise arose over all and continually increased. The external conflict is the eye itself; the narrator feels that the old mans eye is always watching him in turn makes him think he can read his mind. It was openwide, wide openand I grew furious as I gazed upon it. I saw it with perfect distinctnessall a dull blue, with a hideous veil over it that chilled the very marrow in my bones. A madman can only take so much when he fixated on an eye. State of madness is very implicit in this case. The fact that the narrator was way too overly patient and dedicated to stalking the old man night after night, at midnight, seven days before he decides to commit his evil deed. Was obviously the act of a keen madman. Oh, you would have laughed to see how cunningly I thrust in! I moved it slowlyvery, very slowly, so that I might not disturb the old mans sleep. It took me an hour to place my whole head within the opening so far that I could see him as he lay upon his bed. The narrator keeps implying that he is very, very dreadfully nervous. I knew that sound well, too. It was the beating of the old mans heart. It increased my fury, as the beating of a drum stimulates the soldier into courage. This also gives us the reader the hint of him being mad. When ones actions that are thought out with knowing the harsh consequences are a key sign to madness. Basically what I think Edgar Allen Poe is trying to imply to us is that everyone holds a little madness within and subconsciously. We must fight the urge and accept it fully, to be excepted and considered normal. Because everyones got to do it. The emotional feeling of the narrator are those of the depressed. He is neither shy or outgoing. He thinks he is skillful and not mad. If you still think me mad, you will think so no longer when I describe the wise precautions I took for the concealment of the body. He states this because he is trying to persuade the reader into thinking hes smart therefore making the reader come up with the idea how could you be mad if your smart. He does not seem to be caring, yet he does state he loved the old man. Object there was none. Passion there was none. I loved the old man. He is dishonest though for he wasnt going to tell the police about the dead body until his subconscious thoughts made him believe that they too heard the horrifying heart beat of the old man. Which caused his emotional break down. Ones own subconscious mind could create emotions that can persuade one to do deeds in which he/she never thought of. Either it be good or bad like the narrators feelings towards the old mans eye.
